Notes from the studio – what I’m doing, and why

I’ve spent a lot of years involved with building software under other people’s logos. Fine work. Also: you eventually notice the logo isn’t the interesting part, whatever the company would like everyone to believe.

LiveBytes is where the work lives when it’s mine: local-first tools, a product house called Organon, and a place to write without pretending every post is a product launch. This is Notes from the studio: the public bench.

You’ll mostly get tech here. Synesis (mail that lives on your machine) is real software that you’ll probably be able to install soonish. Phronesis is real software I’m still shaping, and I’ll say so instead of inventing a waitlist. Expect sync stories, local-first opinions, and the occasional “why is this still broken at 11pm” energy. You’ll hear about my adventures with my AI agentic “team” – yes, that’s part of the fun and the occasional frustration. You may see a fair bit of what is exciting me in tech at the moment, and it’s equally likely you’ll hear about what I find questionable or frustrating in this ever-changing space, as well.

You’ll also get the rest of me when it’s interesting — or when it collides with the engineering. Music and theater aren’t a branding side quest; they’re part of how I spend a week. Travel shows up the same way: not a travel blog, just the bits that change how I think about tools, time, or what “offline” actually means on a train with bad Wi‑Fi.

And yes — I’m job hunting. That’s part of the real picture too.
